How to tell if your stylist is reputable

Unlike lawyers and accountants, anyone can call them self a personal stylist. So how do you tell a good one?

It’s easy to think that you need to go with someone who’s style you want to emulate, but the truth is that a good stylist well help you undercover your style, even if your body shape, colours and preferences are very different from their own.

Instead look for the following:

  • Do they have formal training in colour analysis, image consulting or personal styling?

  • Do they have good reviews?

  • Do they contribute to the style community and are they regarded well by other stylists?

  • Do their clients all end up looking like them?

At WearAble Wardrobes our stylists are trained in colour analysis using the absolute colour system and in personal style for women.

How to tell if your stylist is a good fit

Different stylists will have a different range of experience. Some specialise in men, some in women, some if people over a certain age. Some focus on everyday style and some special events. Some focus on keeping up with the trends, others on sustainable fashion. If you don’t fall into their specialisation, it is important to check if they have experience and/or are willing to work with people outside of their speciality.

WearAble Wardrobes is an inclusive styling company that focuses on sustainable everyday style.

Our clients include men and women, cis and trans people. We are happy to help everyone to determine and express their unique style. Our clients range in age from 9 to in their 90s. Our current adult clients come in varying shapes and sizes from Size 4 to Size 24 and we have helped larger ladies online.

We specialise in people with health issues. Over 50% of our clients have disclosed some sort of health issue to us. About 5% of our clients have a disability, others have health issues including those that affect their body shape, sensitivity to different fabrics or mobility.

The final test

The final test is to check to see if you get along with the person. You want to have a good relationship with and trust your personal stylist.

At WearAble Wardrobes our consultations run for 3 hrs. That is a long time to spend with someone that you don’t get along with!

Personal style is a mix of science and art. Some stylists focus more of the art and their intuition, others on the science; some are more talkative, others more quiet; some offer more positive reinforcement, others more constructive suggestions; some show you outfits that work; others explain why.

Dr Gina Kingston is the founder of WearAble Wardrobes and is a scientist at heart. We focus on the science, on the facts and figures, we offer constructive suggestions and explain why some outfits work while others don’t.
